Belviq Recall

In February 2020, the manufacturer of the weight loss drug Belviq issued a recall because there was evidence linking the drug to a higher rate of cancer. Belviq (Lorcaserin) was manufactured by Eisai Inc. and helped control appetite by activating serotonin receptors in the brain. It was approved by the FDA in 2012 with some restrictions, and trials showed that 47% of patients achieved at least a 5% loss of body fat over a 2 year trial period.

The first concerns over side effects were released in January of 2020, with an official voluntary recall by the company released by Eisai Inc. and the FDA on Feb. 13, 2020

Why Was Belviq Recalled?

Eisai Inc. withdrew the drug from the market due to an increased risk in cancer for people taking the drug.

After its initial approval by the FDA in 2012, new trials were initiated to examine cardiovascular safety. The subjects of the initial study on Belviq continued to be observed after the initial trials and approval. At the five-year point of using the drug, it was discovered that the group that had been taking Belviq showed an increase in cancer occurrence compared to those who took a placebo during the trial.

In the group that had been taking Belviq, 7.7% of people were diagnosed with cancer, compared to 7.1% of people in the control group. Additionally, there was a significant difference in the types of cancer, with the group who was taking the drug reporting higher rates of colorectal, lung, and pancreatic cancer.

The increased risk of cancer associated with taking Belviq led to the FDA call for withdrawal from the market, as they stated that the potential risk of cancer outweighs the benefits of the weight loss drug.

When Did the FDA Issue a Belviq Recall?

In January 2020, the FDA announced that they were reviewing data from clinical trials which indicated a pattern that more people got cancer after taking Belviq. As a result, the FDA called for the Eisai Inc. to voluntarily withdraw the drug from the market on Feb. 13, 2020, which the corporation complied with.

Who Can File A Belviq Lawsuit?

You can file a lawsuit if you have taken Belviq for at least 6 months in total- the use does not need to be continuous, and you have developed lung, pancreatic, or colorectal cancer.

You must have developed cancer within 7 years of taking the drug, and it must have developed in the lung, pancreas or colon. The cancer cannot have spread to them from other organs.

If you have lost a family member or loved one as a result of cancer you believe was brought on by Belviq, you must talk to a lawyer within a year and a half of their death.

Lawsuits are being filed against Eisai Inc. alleging that the company failed to properly research side effects before releasing it to the market, failed to recognize the link between the drug and cancer, and delayed the drug’s removal from the market.

Although Belviq has been withdrawn from the market, both by Eisai Inc. and the FDA, it may be too late for many of the people who took it. People who were diagnosed with cancer while taking Belviq deserve justice, and the attorneys at Thompson Law Firm are here to help you achieve it.

What Can You Recover from a Belviq Lawsuit?

Those who file a lawsuit and are awarded a settlement may recover the cost of the medical bills incurred during the cancer treatment. In addition, they may recover lost earnings from being unable to work, emotional damages, pain and suffering, and other financial costs that have been incurred.
